Garis & Hahn
Sep. 5, 2024 - Oct. 4, 2014
In this second exhibition with Garis & Hahn, Samuel Stabler will present four new acrylic on paper works from his Old Masters series, a repertoire of appropriated, recontextualized images that began in a sketchbook in 2009 by way of a fascination with art history, the conveniences and mysteries of the digital age, and the precarious, consumer-driven intersection of the two. Using a highlighter as a primary material and the Internet as his primary source, Stabler visits and reawakens classic pieces that have been firmly cemented in art history, and by doctoring their visual language, vocabulary and focus, he reinvigorates the stagnating conversation between us and the past, as well as politically subverts the feigned grandiosity of the originals. These works are the largest dimensions Stabler has utilized for the series (measuring at 40 x 60”), and they feature a color palette of subtle pale shading that extends beyond the gradations of neon that have since become a staple. An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 5th from 7-9pm at Garis & Hahn.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Garis & Hahn will be publishing an 80-page, full-color hardcover book titled “Samuel Stabler Old Masters.” The book, edited by Max Teicher and designed by Eli Rosenbloom, will feature a catalog essay on Stabler’s work and approach, written by former Metropolitan Museum of Art Curator Lisa Messinger. A book release party will be held on Sunday, September 7th from 2-6pm at Garis & Hahn.
