Carl Buergerniss (1877-1956): A Leading South Jersey Impressionist
John F. Peto Studio Museum
May. 31, 2025 - Sep. 7, 2014
Carl Beurgerniss first came to Island Heights, a picturesque shore town on the Toms River in New Jersey, in 1906 or 1907. He worked in oils, watercolors, pen and ink, and pastels doing most of his oil landscapes during his summers in Island Heights. These works, painted outdoors, have a freshness and spontaneity free from formula. Beurgerniss was a remarkable and prolific draftsman, drawing constantly. Of the more than one hundred artists who made their homes or summered at Island Heights, Carl Buergerniss was among the very best. More than one hundred of his works are on display the John F. Peto Studio Museum, the fully restored home and studio of John F. Peto (1854-1907), the renowned 19th century Trompe l’Oeil painter. The museum features original furnishings, artworks and photographs of and by the artist.
