“Elegant Containers: Commercial Displays at Nineteenth-Century World’s Fairs”

This talk will consider the display strategies at the World’s Columbian Exposition and the half century of world’s fairs in Europe and America that preceded it: how they helped transform the relationship between consumers and commercial goods in the late nineteenth century, and the effects of the World’s Columbian Exposition in particular on American cultural landscape.
