On May 11, 2023 Aicon Contemporary will place itself in a genealogy of historical efforts that have been undertaken to highlight the work of women in this genre of painting. We present to you the abstraction of : Shobha Broota, Sonja Larsson and Dhara Mehrotra. Broota (Indian b. 1943) has a longstanding practice wherein she has explored herself in many mediums and forms. Larsson (Swedish b. 1955) paints musical illusions that hypnotize the viewer. Mehrotra’s (Indian b. 1979) practice is intertwined with science, the nature around us and the networks it establishes. This show brings questions of geography and cultural context into the conversation about gender and abstraction.
