My work is a modern reinterpretation of the materials in traditional Korean folk paintings, such as Sipjangsaengdo(Ten Symbols of Longevity) and Ilwol Obongdo(Painting of the Sun, Moon and the Five Peaks). Subject matters in folktales, such as the sky, sea, cloud, sun, and moon, are not mere natural scenery but encompass human dreams and hopes. By making large copies of bar codes, QR codes, and bitcoins, leaving only the necessary images for the silkscreen plate, then repeatedly blocking them with tape, I wanted to create a modern landscape. By doing so, I would like to satirize today’s modern society, where humanity has vanished, and everything is mechanically managed and controlled.

Hyun Young Oh
After graduating from Hongik University with B.F.A in 1972, Hyun Young Oh studied silkscreen printing again. She held many exhibitions including invitational solo exhibitions following her first solo exhibition in 2004, and she is currently working on her own methods of work combining printing and painting.
