Spring has finally sprung and art is running wild in the “Great Escape 2” exhibition at the Gallery on the Green!  Join us as we break loose through paintings, drawings, graphic arts, sculpture, ceramics, fiber/beadwork and photography in a reprise of the fun first Great Escape last year.  Also on view are two solo shows.

Anna Webersen’s show, “Bound & Connected,” features bright, energetic abstract paintings inspired by our connections to each other and how we choose to relate. Webersen says that she “plays with ideas of spontaneity and constraint, creating multiple layers in some works and a more spacious approach in others. Fences, vines and links represent the ties and turning points we encounter as we navigate life and relationships.”

She received her BFA from the University of Georgia and further training at the Hartford Art School/University of Hartford, where she currently serves as the Trustee for the endowment.  She is also on the Executive Board of Five Points Arts.  Over four decades she had the opportunity to make extensive use of her artistic skills in a career as a graphic designer, sales executive and decorative painter. Her award-winning paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in numerous juried and group shows.

David Holzman’s solo show, “Structure: Sculpture, Painting and Prints” includes small carved and painted basswood sculptures of architectural forms covered with stream of consciousness imagery, mostly of human figures in various contorted positions. Also on display are Holzman’s carved wall reliefs, paintings in acrylic on panels and woodcut prints.

Holzman studied at Hartford Art School and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was a recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship. Working in a converted garage in Avon, Holzman developed his very distinctive style of integrating painting, printmaking and sculpture.  His work was published in Art Spiegelman’s RAW comics anthology as well as Zero Zero from Seattle.  Over the past 10 years Holzman has been creating The Book of Umm, revitalizing the surrealist practice of automatic drawing as a wellspring of visual energy in gouache paintings and the spontaneous fabrication of imagery in monumental carved relief sculpture.

The opening reception for all three shows is Saturday, May 28th from 6:00-8:00 pm.  The reception including refreshments is free, and the public is warmly invited.

The Canton Artists’ Guild at the Gallery on the Green, the longest continuously-running artist guild in the state, has 3 separate galleries and hosts month-long exhibitions nine times a year.
