Linda Fleming: Intertwined
Brian Gross Fine Art
Mar. 12, 2024 - May. 21, 2022
Brian Gross Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of “Intertwined,” an exhibition of new works by renowned sculptor Linda Fleming on Saturday, March 12th, with a reception from 3:00-5:30pm and an artist talk at 3:30pm. On view will be monumental painted stainless steel sculptures, powder coated wall reliefs and large-scale pastel drawings. The works in the exhibition reveal Fleming’s latest explorations in flowing lines, geometric volumes, and the dynamic interplay of light, shadow, and color. The exhibition will be on view through May 21, 2022.
Two new large outdoor sculptures will highlight Linda Fleming’s exhibition. In “Valley Fog”, Fleming’s signature laser-cut lacework patterning flows seamlessly across the work’s expansive, folded forms of layered polychrome stainless steel. In “Hachure”, Fleming explores new visual territory by slicing each of the sculpture’s geometric panel sections into a field of parallel bars and reducing her palette to a single color. The results combine the optical effects of opposing geometries, shifting incidents of light and shadow, and changing color combinations when moving around and looking through the sculptures.
Linda Fleming’s explorations into layered geometries carries over into two of her newest powder coated stainless steel wall reliefs – “Orogeny” and “Fault Block” – as well as in her recent large-scale pastel drawings. In two other wall reliefs – “Lenticular” and “Tumult” – Fleming iterates and distorts the same organic, linear shape and combines them into unique complex compositions of fluid shapes and sumptuous colors.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Linda Fleming received her education at Carnegie Mellon University. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and has been collected internationally. Fleming’s recent publicly viewable commissions include monumental works for the Oakland Museum of California (2016), Santa Clara University (2017), and Burlingame Point (2021). In 2007, she had a mid-career retrospective, titled “Refugium,” at The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art and in 2018 the UCCS Galleries of Contemporary Art at the University of Colorado mounted “Confluence: Linda Fleming,” which presented eighty of her recent works. In 2016, Fleming received the International Sculpture Center’s “2016 Outstanding Educator Award” and California College of the Arts mounted “Linda Fleming: Tangible Mind” at the Oliver Art Center. Fleming is currently Professor Emeritus at California College of the Arts, where she taught sculpture for 30 years.
Linda Fleming’s work is represented in major public and private collections throughout the United States, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, CA; Oakland Museum of California; Berkeley Art Museum, CA; Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, CA; Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, NV; Albuquerque Museum, NM; Runnymede Sculpture Farm, Woodside, CA; Sheldon Museum of Art, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE; Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI; and Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, MO, among others. “Intertwined” is Linda Fleming’s sixth solo exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art.
