Keira Kotler: Light of Day
Brian Gross Fine Art
Jan. 15, 2024 - Mar. 5, 2022
Brian Gross Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of “Keira Kotler: Light of Day” on Saturday, January 15, 2022, with a reception from 3:00 – 5:00pm and an artist talk at 4:00pm. The exhibition will feature medium and large-scale photoworks comprised of Kotler’s signature abstracted depictions of color and light. Full of sumptuous tonalities, Kotler’s multi-part gridded arrangements combine radiant color with serial repetition of imagery to form dynamic, soft–edged patterned works. The exhibition will be on view through March 5, 2022.
Continuing her exploration of light and color, Keira Kotler’s new photographic works explore moments of illumination through subtle shifts of value. Drawn to the chromatic drama of natural light, Kotler captures this phenomena using her camera. Repeating and combining these images in different orientations, Kotler produces fields of rhythmic, resonant color. The resulting shifts in hue create a sense of loose patterning in these works that stands in contrast to the strict grid structure of the overall composition. In other works, Kotler explores the juxtaposition of imagery and harmonious color relationships in diptychs composed of paired images. Informed by her intuitive knowledge of color, as well as color theory and its psychological component, Kotler’s photoworks amplify form and light to create nuanced perceptual experiences.
Keira Kotler received her B.A. in 1993 from Barnard College of Columbia University and her M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2006. Her work has been shown at the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, Napa, CA; The U.S. Embassy, Panama City, Panama; Palm Springs Art Museum, CA; University of New Hampshire Museum of Art, Durham; UCSF Women’s Health Center, and twice exhibited at Site Santa Fe in New Mexico. Her work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections internationally. This is Keira Kotler’s third solo exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art.
