Michael Boyd
Presented by Hedge Gallery
Hedge is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by California-based vanguard collector and designer Michael Boyd. This show is curated to display Boyd’s new design work in the rich context of his personal, creative environment, and collection. the considered mix of pieces includes furniture: seating, tables, and stools; as well as objects. Boyd draws inspiration from the forms of the modern design pioneers yet adds a new voice. Working with a team, Boyd scrupulously oversees the craftsmanship and materials employed in creating his designs. A dual inclination—towards constructivist, architectonic purity and organic, anthropomorphic sculptural form, sets up a universe of possibilities. The results are furniture and equipment for life that are simple and pleasing--yet these do not preclude refinement and sophistication. On the search for form, Boyd has said: “Re:Visions aims to express the modernist ideal of fusing form and function, style and logic, passion and discipline. It is about melding disparate thoughts and visions into the making of unified, synthesized, things—things of high culture and low, both near neighbors in design paradigms, and far away philosophies, but above all, it is about loving then and living now.” From 1995-2001 Michael Boyd’s music studio was located in the space where Hedge now resides. This coming full circle is noteworthy, as it inspired boyd to create a tangible, amalgamated environment in which to present his new work. Through the duration of the exhibition Hedge will present a music soundtrack, Music for Modern Rooms, that Boyd has created to complete this show. In 2012, Boyd created the series of work entitled PLANEfurniture. SFMOMA, Palm Springs Museum of Art, and the UCSB, Gebhard Architecture + Design Collection, have all accessioned the furniture into their permanent collections. Boyd has restored historical architecture by many of the modernist masters: Oscar Niemeyer, Paul Rudolph, Richard Neutra, Craig Ellwood, John Lautner, R.M. Schindler, and A. Quincy Jones.
