Able Fine Art NY Gallery is pleased to present “Vitality”, a solo exhibition by artist Heangsook Choi. The exhibition will comprise of Choi’s body of work over the past decade, extending from 2005 to 2018. Each piece will share ‘one stroke, one title’, Choi’s signature style of line painting which is drawn with one condensed brush stroke. The dramatic movements of the lines create the variety of curves, thickness, and texture, that presents the visualized beauty of “Vitality”. This is the concept of authentic Asian sensibility that is presented to her audience.

With a B.F.A. from Kyungsung University, most of her artistic career has been built in Korea. Her works have been featured by renowned galleries and institutions all over the country from regions ranging from Seoul in the North, and down to Busan in the South. After earning an excellent reputation from successful numbers of solo and group exhibitions, Choi began her journey to reach art viewers around the world. Choi has recently, presented her works at international art fairs in Singapore and Miami. This will be Choi’s first exhibition in New York City and it will be the stepping stone to the Western contemporary art world.

Choi stated that “A line is one of the most fundamental and essential components of painting” and from this idea, the artist has developed an extremely minimalistic style: One Stroke, One Title. To depict the vitality, she creates the dramatic contrast with a variety of textures, thickness, and orbits, that are components that have originated from authentic Asian sensibility. Choi uses the combination of Western and Korean techniques from her choice of medium and the way she uses lines and negative spaces. Vitality (2005) shows how she utilizes the space with an unconstrained line and with one strong curvy line, she breaks the space and recreates it into that of a shape of vitality. To deliver the moment of simplified sensation, the majority of her works are monotone. However, she also specifies the theme and message of certain pieces with a diversity of color. This style is practiced in her work Vitality Heart (2016). This painting, in particular, shows how Choi has adopted colors in her work after years of practice in monochrome.

“The style of my work requires strenuous movement; the intensity of the moments can be only depicted through a line that is drawn instantly by leaning oneself onto the brush.” Along with this artist statement, Choi described her method by looking at a blank canvas and drawing a line in her mind. Once she finds the path, she would throw herself onto the canvas with a single brush. The fearless delivery of energy through these free lines, it represents Choi’s devotion to its particular moment in time. Choi encourages the viewer to stop chasing its fast-changing environment and to appreciate the energy and “Vitality” of each and every moment.
