TIM EADS – Soft Focus

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 4, 5:00 – 7:00 PM

Pentimenti Gallery continues its spring season with a solo exhibition by TIM EADS.

For ‘Soft Focus’, Tim Eads presents a new body of work he describes as, “paintings reimagined as tufted textiles”. Each piece is created using ‘dead stock’ yarn of the highest quality that has been thoughtfully selected and composed based on pile height and color, then individually applied using a hand-held tufter. These works expand upon Eads’ exploration of rigid geometries and digital designs to incorporate elements of depth and softness inherent within their materiality.

With this work, Eads continues to find new ways of creating fascinating moments of beauty and lasting meaning inside his own unique funhouse of playful creativity. At the core of much of his work is an emphasis on the importance of environmental awareness and sustainable practices. While sincere, Eads has an extraordinary way of presenting these ideas in an optimistic, lighthearted, and vibrantly colorful manner. With each piece, Eads invites viewers to set the world aside and enter the work, see themselves, be cheerful and laugh.

Eads says of the work, “These pieces draw on my previous textile work while also playfully echoing the domestic shag-rugged interiors of my past. The work is created using ‘dead stock’ yarn harvested from a historic carpet weaving company in Penndel, PA. It’s the highest quality yarn available, but bound for the landfill due to lack of end use. The textile industry is the second most wasteful industry in the world, only behind petroleum. The United States produces 15 million pounds of textile production waste annually. This is only the waste created when a garment is made.”

Tim Eads received his BFA from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield, MI. His work has been exhibited across the United States with notable shows at: Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA; The Delaware Contemporary, Wilmington, DE; Please Touch Museum, Philadelphia, PA; Murray State University Gallery, Murray, KY; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, DE; Penn State School of Visual Arts, State College, PA; among others. Eads is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including: Tech Solutions Grant, Entrepreneur Works (2016); Small But Mighty Arts Grant (2016); Please Touch Museum Residency (2013); Recycled Artist-in-Residency (RAIR) (2011); Weston A. Price Foundation Grant (2010). His work is found in several public collections: The West Collection, Oaks, PA; Please Touch Museum, Philadelphia, PA; Kirkland Museum of Decorative Arts, Denver, CO.
