Tarryn Teresa Gallery
Sep. 7, 2024 - Oct. 5, 2019
Public exhibition for Los Angeles based artist, Aaron Axelrod.
Opening reception: September 7th, 7-9pm
Axelrod’s work blends subject matter from various sources of inspiration that are presented in a unique way. From physics to the occult, his work captures the essence of unfamiliar juxtapositions. Performance and process are equally as important to his work
as the final result, whether it be painting, installation, sculpture or video art. Donning sparkling pink bunny ears, Axelrod approaches his art making in much the same way that Alice approached the rabbit hole, with a burning curiosity. The result, for both Alice an
Aaron, was happily stumbling across the bizarre.
This exploration resulted in a process in which he is able to bring to light a fleeting moment, and freeze it. This concept brought about Splat!. A colorful splash from a paint bucket, juxtaposed against a hooded figure, forever frozen in time. The piece invites a dialogue between the ordinary and the surreal. Naturally, the volume of the splash would never realistically fit in the bucket. The color of the paint and the decision to keep the hooded figure all white further separate the piece from what is real. Curiously, the action at hand, the physical throwing of the paint, is not an unnatural act. It’s this ability of Axelrod being able to depict a seemingly unremarkable task (throwing a bucket of paint) in a psychedelic way that
inspires such awe in his work.
