The quarries of the Slate Valley in New York and Vermont provide the majority of the colored roofing slate produced in the U.S. today. Guest curator Serena Kovalosky expands the perception of slate as a functional material with “Slate as Muse”, a national art exhibition at the Slate Valley Museum that celebrates slate through the language of fine art. The exhibition features 19 professional artists from throughout the U.S. who used slate as their creative muse to create works of art in sculpture as well as in painting, encaustic, photography and mixed media. Kovalosky interviewed each artist and shares the stories behind every piece in the exhibition’s gallery guide. Everything from roofing slate to raw slate to meticulously carved slate is in this show, alongside mesmerizing abstractions and beautful slate landscapes. It will make you see slate in a whole new way.
