JAMES VERBICKY
Working within the collage medium, James Verbicky’s sculptural collages are visually rich in content and meaning. The work can be read as both sculpture as well as painting, an opulent, textural assemblage of paper strips that unfurl and cascade over the surface. Verbicky’s current body of “media paintings” explores the idea of the mental continuum or mind stream through paper collage.
By utilizing antique and vintage paper and magazines from numerous countries and time periods, Verbicky encapsulates the prevalence and omnipresence of media through his work. The pieces are sculptural collages that play on the on the idea of the found object or assemblage, with Verbicky positioning the strips to create new images that become evident at a distance, the jumble of words and colors taking on new form and shape. Language is an important part of Verbicky’s artistic practice as well, with the positioning of the letters, symbols, and phrases taking on new life as well, transforming the disparate elements into a continuous story. The works carry a spiritual resonance as through Verbicky’s choice in titles, uniting the works in the idea of awareness of both the constant fluctuations of our lives and the universal state of motion.
