Object and Influence
An examination of inspirational ephemera
Opening Reception: Saturday, January 7, 6-8pm

Upcoming in Hygienic Art’s underground gallery will be “Object and Influence”, an exhibit which will explore the objects, images and music that inspire artists’ work. Curated by Jason Silva, the Opening Reception will be held on Saturday January 7th from 6-8pm. The exhibit focuses on the space where ideas begin, before being reformulated, repurposed and rebuilt.

Source images dot most artists’ studio walls, whether it is a postcard or a ripped page from a catalogue. Odd ephemera line most artists’ shelves. Perhaps, a ceramic jar or an antique toy occupies the space where creation happens. Sound carries from speakers setting the backdrop. To remove these items from the studio and place them in a gallery setting creates an opportunity to envision a backstory to and can lead to an artist’s unique way of combining images and themes.

The show will have three sections that will maximize the exhibition space. Each artist has selected one object, two unique images and three sound files that in some way inform their own artwork. Object and Influence builds a dialogue amongst a large group of working artists based on their shared experience working in a studio environment and the information that populates that space.
