Natalie Frank works directly with wet pigmented paper pulp to make portraits of women with animal counterparts who act as talismans, spirit guides, or alter egos. Frank’s brightly colored, lavish subjects pulse with life. Simultaneously beautiful and grotesque, these dynamic portraits both reference and challenge the construction of feminine identity and conventional gender norms. Yet again, Frank surprises, unnerves, and delights us with compelling images that cross artistic disciplines and highlight the unwavering power and agency of women.
