Able Fine Art NY Gallery is pleased to present “Memories of life”, a solo exhibition of Hyunkyung Chang. The exhibition will consist of her fantastical landscape paintings, which address the recollection of her past. The artist’s passions, evoked by her memories, are demonstrated with her use of frantically rushed brushstrokes, as if a remembrance has just washed over and must be conveyed in haste.

Chang, a Korean artist, has exhibited her works in South Korea and New York. She has participated in art fairs across the globe; Japan, China, South Korea, Iran, Singapore, and the United States. Presently, she is a member of the Korean Fine Arts Association and is internationally recognized as an artist with the keen skill of reflecting psychological memorabilia through her works.

The exhibition features Hyunkyung Chang’s most recent works, efficaciously taking us on a symbolic trip to the past through transcendental images of village narratives. Whilst some of the pieces flaunt a profound use of saturation in their coloring, others are more muted in tonality in part by the use of whimsical pastels. The foreground of her compositions often contain the figures or houses belonging to her hometown, which, becoming interchangeable, begin to hold the same significance; the people we come across hold the same feelings of homeliness as the spaces which they inhabit. The artist’s poetic vision, expressing space through the use of color, indicate her understanding of humanity; the boundless content of her paintings allows a sense of universal relatability and motivates self-reflection, as we all share a continuous quest to explore ourselves.

“My hometown, nostalgia, reminiscence, and a longing for childhood and my family, all of these are in my memory…I think I have tried to expose myself in the time and space which contains my memories, and then reinterpreted their meaning,” reflects artist Hyunkyung Chung. Through this exhibition, we may all connect our own feelings of nostalgia to those of the artist, depicted through the use of fanciful abstraction belonging to her paintings.
