The Gallery on the Green has its annual exhibition of “Members’ New Work” from January 8th through February 7th. Featured are photography, painting, drawing, prints and sculpture by the membership — one hundred talented local artisans. In addition, upstairs galleries have solo exhibitions by painter, Jessica David and by professional photographer, Gregory Kriss.
Jessica David studied fine art and art history at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn before training as a painting conservator at the University of Cambridge, UK. She now works as a conservator at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven. The subjects of David’s paintings are typically rundown, derelict locations that have a special meaning to her. Applying oil and acrylic spray paint, she merges photographs and memories into something new, beautiful and independent from the original context. Her paintings incorporate effects common to photography, such as blurring, vignetting and overexposure.
Until his retirement in 2007, Gregory Kriss was the photographer for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Connecticut. From 1988-2011 he served as photographer for River Front Recapture, and has taught photography courses at several colleges in the Hartford area. His photographs have appeared in historical books on Canton and Collinsville.
Kriss particularly enjoys taking pictures outdoors while pursuing his hobbies of rock climbing, hiking and camping. At the age of 58 he earned an MFA in Photography at Hartford Art School. This gave him the opportunity to turn to more experimental, abstract, and nonfigurative photography, which led him to create “Block Matrix” images: Images which up close look like a collection of color squares but from a distance take the appearance of actual objects. His MFA show consisted of Block Matrixes of gas stations. In other work he explores and meditates on the harmonic reflections of the sun made by ripples in the water.
More recently he has turned from digital to more traditional technology, photographing natural images with view cameras and film up to 11×14 inches in size, printing on hand coated platinum/palladium paper.
The public is warmly invited to come and meet the artists at the free opening reception held on Saturday, January 9th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

The Canton Artists’ Guild at the Gallery on the Green, the longest continuously-running artist guild in the state, has 3 separate galleries and hosts 9 month-long exhibitions each year. The gallery is located near the intersection of Dowd Avenue and Route 44 at 5 Canton Green Road in Canton. Hours are Friday – Sunday, 1-5 pm. The main floor gallery is handicapped accessible.
