The Art League of Long Island presents an exhibition of works by acrylic painters Joe Bucci and Joe Cupani in Joe2, showing in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery July 19 through August 3. The opening reception takes place July 19 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

For those who lived in New York City in the 1950’s and 1960’s, the sight of Joe Cupani’s works evoke feelings of nostalgia through his poignant paintings of a bygone era. As Cupani puts it: “In my opinion, a painting is not a picture of something. Nor is it a story or narrative. It’s a statement of color, shape, line and form. Finding a truth through the former is my goal. Hopefully the viewer will connect and say “I understand. I can’t put my finger on it, but I understand. I know what you mean.” As far as style, put Edward Hopper and Richard Diebenkorn in a Hamilton Beach blender and you’ll get what I strive for. “

Working out of his Montauk studio, many of Joe Bucci’s landscapes and seascapes capture the essence of the lay of the land of Long Island’s East End. According to Bucci, “I use a combination of Expressionist and Impressionists techniques to celebrate what, in the subject, got my attention in the first place. I look for poses of people that reflect an attitude, and landscape scenes that have a strong abstract quality.”
