Opening on Friday, May 8th, Worrell Smith Gallery presents a lively exhibition entitled “44 Years… and counting,” a telling collaborative show between Nancy Jurs and husband Wendell Castle.

The show speaks to the testament that an artful house is an interesting one. The exhibition captures the flaring spirit of life and object that has emerged from under one roof in Scottsville, New York.

“44 Years… and counting” celebrates the 44th Anniversary between Nancy and Wendell. The show brings together the work of two longtime, accomplished artists who have traveled this life together but remain independent in vision and execution.

Nancy Jurs studied at the School for American Craftsmen and created functional Raku works for the first 15 years of her career. Thereafter she began to create a body of work that expanded technique and proportion and found itself rooted in the emergence of women. Nancy’s work has been widely recognized and is in the collections of the Museum of Art and Design, the Smithsonian Institution, and many others. Her work in the upcoming show is a brilliant exploration of guard, hearth, and joy.

By her side, we find Wendell Castle, pioneer of the Furniture as Art movement. Throughout his career, Wendell has explored sculptural furniture through size, dimension, medium, and form and has work in over forty museum and institutional collections worldwide. Wendell’s work will focus on gilded fiberglass forms that rise from the floor into organic and sculptural art furniture.

“Regarded independently, both Wendell and Nancy are focusing on ideas of emergence and spirit,” says Greg Smith, Curator. “But together, you begin to see their minds at work with one another and the roles they play, how their work relates and contrasts. And after all is said and done, you begin to get an idea of what it’s like to live a life of constant creation.”

“44 Years… and counting” opens on May 8th at 6:30pm at Worrell Smith Gallery. The artist-attended reception is open to the public and will be held at 611 Riverside Ave, Westport, CT 06880. The exhibition will continue from May 8th to June 11th. For more information, please visit www.worrellsmithgallery.com or call 203-297-3059.
