Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is one of the largest art museums in the west and holds over 100,000 works of art that date throughout the centuries. The museum offers special exhibitions, a significant permanent collection on exhibition, public programs and research facilities.

The LACMA presents Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy, one of the most popular Italian artists active in Rome, Naples, Malta, and Sicily in the late 1600’s. Considered the Baroque school of painting, the exhibit looks at 56 works form the period including eight works by the master that cover the evolution of his style. Highlighted in the show is Caravaggio’s ability to transform human form with complete attention to physical realism and dramatic use of light. His work is only rivaled by the paintings of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

The show also offers an opportunity to experience the stories of Caravaggio’s life, his fame while alive and legendary tumultuous life. He was well known for brawling, and mischievous behavior that fueled his popularity in Rome. Included in the Caravaggio’s legacy is the work of twenty artists from Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands who continued his style into the late 17th century.
