The North Dakota Museum of Art is a private not-for-profit institution managed by its a Board of Trustees.

The presents its Permanent Collection of contemporary, international art in all media begining at the early 1970s, the museums inception. In addition to popular art objects, it collects the visual history of the region created by local artists. The museum offers a survey collection of contemporary Native American art, that first emerged forty years ago when the Native American movement of art first emerged. Included are collections of historical value to the region and modern works.
