Daumier’s Satire and Censors, a lecture by Andrew Stevens, Distinguished Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. Committed to the democratic ideals of the French revolution, Daumier’s satirical jabs were aimed at his fellow Parisians, frequently the middle class, but politicians as well, when the law allowed. The lecture will introduce audiences to Daumier’s mordant wit and trace his response to the changing censorship laws of this time. Held in conjunction with the exhibition, Daumier Lithographs: Characters and Caricatures on view in the Leslie and Johanna Garfield Galleries through February 19.
