This intensive workshop introduces techniques for creating realistic portraits from a model using charcoal and color pencil on toned paper. Students begin with an examination of proportions of the face, progress to studying its contours, then build volume using charcoal, an eraser and white pencil. The final result is a life-like rendering of the face in both dark and light tones.

Materials needed: pad of toned paper (gray or other neutral color recommended, large enough for a full-scale face); vine (willow) charcoal; charcoal pencil (2B or 4B); compressed charcoal; white color pencil (prismacolor works well and is available individually); eraser
