National Academy Museum & School

Workshop days are Mon and Wed Oct 19 and 2, 2015 at 6:00pm-9:00pm.
The artist’s statement is a particularly difficult genre: it has to accurately represent you and your work in a medium that isn’t the one you work in. It needs to be clear and informative, without being dull. It’s subject to externally imposed word limits, and, since it’s typically attached to a grant or residency application, it’s anxiety producing. However, like all forms of writing, the artist’s statement has methods that can be taught and learned.

This two-session workshop will include an overview of how to write a statement, including approaches, dos, and don’ts; workshopping, time to work on statements and receive instructor and peer feedback. Participants will be expected to work on their statements between the first and second session; they will receive feedback on both the early version and the later versions.
