Josef Glimer Gallery is pleased to present From Birth to Memory, a unique exhibition featuring the works of Chicago-based artist Ellen Holtzblatt. All are invited to join us on Friday, November 21 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for the opening reception and to meet with the artist. To coincide with the exhibition, Holtzblatt will be giving an artist’s talk with Q & A on Friday at 7pm.

Ellen Holtzblatt creates paintings, woodcut prints and artist books. Her work is fueled by the yearning
exploration of the connection between the physical and the spiritual — the forgetfulness of the earthly body and the memory that resides in the soul. Holtzblatt’s paintings reveal our paradoxical access to and disconnection from the past, examining her own identity by attempting to contact a “collective ancestral unconscious.”

Holtzblatt has exhibited her work nationally and internationally at venues including the Museum of Biblical Art in New York, Inselgalerie in Berlin, The University of Illinois at Chicago and the Harold Washington Library. She was most recently featured in the solo exhibition Memory and Birds at the Chicago Cultural Center. Her work is in key public and private collections including the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection in Chicago and The Center for Book Arts in New York, who selected her book Sefer Hana for an exhibition of works from their permanent collection in 2011. She holds a BFA and a Graduate Certificate in Art Therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

As space is limited, RSVPs for the artist’s talk are recommended. Ellen Holtzblatt: From Birth to Memory will be on display through December at Josef Glimer Gallery, 207 W. Superior. To RSVP or for more information, email [email protected] or call 312-787-4640.
