Starting October 3, Gruta – Espaço de Arte Contemporânea presents Mundo caduco, an exhibition bringing together, for the first time, works by Gabrilândia, Lucas Matoso and Marina Cespe, curated by Daniel Donato. The exhibition brings together three painting practices that explore the juxtaposition, overload and friction between images, texts and matter, taking the relationship between visual signs into a zone of instability.
The exhibition approaches obsolescence as a symptom of a limit in the visual and linguistic regimes that structure contemporary experience. The works draw on distinct repertoires and question the stability of images and signs in the face of the speed of circulation, accumulation and transformation to which they are subjected. In this context, painting ceases to operate solely as a space of representation or contemplation and becomes a field of tension between form and meaning.

Our Days of Harvest continues Mahiriki Tangaroa's ongoing exploration of Cook Islands contemporary identity, examining how inherited knowledge and cultural values might inform present-day challenges. The exhibition contrasts traditional concepts of harvest with contemporary debates surrounding seabed mining, questioning what is gained when longstanding practices are abandoned and what wisdom may still reside within them.
Traditionally, harvest implied cultivation, stewardship and the collective sharing of abundance. It was a process measured not only by what was gathered, but by the relationships and responsibilities that sustained it.
In this new body of work, Tangaroa places these values alongside the emerging discourse surrounding the extraction of polymetallic nodules from the deep ocean. While seabed mining presents the prospect of significant economic opportunity for the Cook Islands, it also raises unresolved questions regarding environmental responsibility, ownership and the equitable distribution of wealth.
Rather than offering definitive answers, Tangaroa invites reflection on how societies assign value, manage resources and imagine prosperity. Through a visual language informed by Cook Islands history, mythology and contemporary life, the exhibition reconsiders the meaning of harvest today. What does it mean to gather from the land and sea? Who benefits from abundance? And how might traditional understandings of stewardship contribute to decisions that will shape future generations?
Our Days of Harvest is both a celebration of cultural continuity and a timely consideration of one of the most significant conversations facing the Cook Islands in the twenty-first century. |

The Adachi UKIYOE Award is seeking artists to become eshi (artists) who create contemporary ukiyo-e.
Ukiyo-e prints are a uniquely Japanese art form created through the collaboration of three specialists: the eshi, carver, and printer. Based on the eshi’s design, the carver carves the blocks and the printer transfers the image onto washi paper to complete a single ukiyo-e print. Hokusai, Hiroshige, and generations of other eshi have reflected in their works the customs, people, and atmosphere of their own times.
The Adachi UKIYOE Award was established in 2009 with the aim of discovering new eshi who can create ukiyo-e for the present day. We invite artists to take part in contemporary ukiyo-e production as eshi, creating original designs that will serve as the basis for woodcuts. We welcome the distinctive sensibilities and expressions of artists working today, without requiring them to follow traditional ukiyo-e styles.
The Grand Prize and Excellence Award winners will collaborate with Adachi’s carvers and printers to transform their own designs into traditional woodcuts. Working together with the artisans, they will take part in the production process, considering carving, printing, color, and other elements as the original design is transformed into a woodcut.
We invite you to join our artisans as a new eshi, creating ukiyo-e that reflects the world we live in today.
Learn More About the Adachi UKIYOE Award
Before applying, please be sure to read the following guide to understand traditional woodcut production and the role of the eshi.
Ukiyo-e blossomed at the center of the culture of Edo (present-day Tokyo) and became widely popular among the common people by capturing the trends of the times such as popular actors and courtesans and places of interest. After the end of the Edo Period, The vivid colors and distinctive compositions greatly influenced Impressionist artists such as Van Gogh and Monet and people around the world. Still today, ukiyo-e is widely appreciated around the country and the world as a representative cultural heritage of Japan. Greatly contributing to the popularity of ukiyo-e are traditional woodcut printing techniques, which were developed for the mass production of ukiyo-e.

Located in Downtown and just one block from Princeton University, The Solley Theatre at the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts will host Crowns of Princeton, a collective exhibition by Point Pleasant Publishing. Crowns of Princeton is focused on surveying the status of experimental art as opposed to a fixed, generalized theme. Due to the unconventional nature of the show being held in a theatre with large windows, spanning one day, and incorporating moving-image, performance, and 2-D / 3-D visual art, Crowns of Princeton is more similar to an arts festival rather than a standard exhibition.

Piandimeleto (PU) – There is a material that, more than any other, endures through time without losing its identity. It is stone. It holds the memory of civilizations, narrates the landscape, preserves human labor, and stands as a testament to our capacity to build beauty. It is the material of coherence: it remains faithful to its own nature while accompanying the path of history, reminding us of who we are and suggesting the direction in which we wish to go.
From this vision emerges "ARCANA – The Lion of the New Horizon," the new international exhibition by sculptor Andrea da Montefeltro, which opened on Friday, July 10 at 6:30 PM in the halls of the Museum Complex of the Oliva Counts’ Castle in Piandimeleto, one of the most significant architectural landmarks in the Montefeltro region.
The exhibition is officially part of the national itinerary for the 800th Anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, under the artistic direction of Annalisa Di Maria, an internationally renowned scholar, one of the leading experts on Leonardo da Vinci and Renaissance culture, and an authoritative voice in Neoplatonic studies.
For almost three months, the Museum Complex of the Oliva Counts’ Castle will thus return to its original vocation: to be a place where art, thought, and beauty continue to generate new horizons and new dialogues between cultures.

At the National Gallery Singapore, Fear No Power: Women Imagining Otherwise brings together a powerful constellation of voices reshaping how art engages with systems of authority and possibility. This significant exhibition charts the interconnected lives and practices of five Southeast Asian artists—Nirmala Dutt (Malaysia), Imelda Cajipe Endaya (Philippines), Amanda Heng (Singapore), Phaptawan Suwannakudt (Thailand), and Dolorosa Sinaga (Indonesia)—whose work defies imposed categories and resists any singular or fixed definition of feminism.
Spanning the 1960s to the 2010s—a period shaped by decolonization, Cold War tensions, and profound social transformations—this event celebrates their multifaceted contributions, not only as artists, but also as educators, writers, and community advocates. Five fearless women. One shared vision of art and empowerment. |

Frida: The Making of an Icon will showcase over 30 of Kahlo’s most iconic works that introduce her ‘many selves’ – the dedicated wife, the intellectual, the modern artist, and the political activist. Alongside treasured garments, jewellery, photographs and memorabilia, there are over 200 works by her contemporaries and the artists she inspired from later generations, celebrating her lasting impact on those who continue to reimagine and reclaim her remarkable story.
The show will culminate by exploring ‘Fridamania’. Kahlo’s transformation into a global brand will feature more than 200 commercial objects that encompass her art, image, style and persona.
Encounter a journey entirely unique to this fearless, revolutionary artist, one that offers a fascinating insight into the transformative power of Frida’s life and work, the intriguing notion of fandom and the diversity of communities who claim her as their own.
Frida: The Making of an Icon is organised by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in collaboration with Tate Modern. The exhibition is in partnership with Lead Global Supporter, Bank of America. Supported by John J. Studzinski CBE. Further support from The Dyers' Company. With additional support from the Frida: Making of an Icon Supporters Circle and Tate Members. |

The Nomad Art Prize is an international award for the visual arts celebrating the dialogue between artistic creation and the places that inspire it. Founded on the belief that art is by its very nature nomadic — capable of crossing borders, cultures and contexts — the prize aims to discover 8 artists whose work embodies this spirit of movement.
Each edition takes place in a different city, creating a shifting geography of contemporary art. For 2026, Lisbon — with its layered history, maritime heritage and vibrant creative scene — is both backdrop and muse.

Hosted by Gallery NAT, the winning artists of the UK international art competition “The Lost Vision – 2025 London Contemporary Art Review Exhibition” were officially announced on July 15, 2025.
This international art competition, organized by Gallery NAT, received submissions from artists across dozens of major countries and regions around the world. The final results were determined by a panel of academic reviewers from Gallery NAT, alongside invited independent jurors — including renowned artists, professors, interdisciplinary creators, and curators from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Switzerland — who evaluated the works independently.
According to the final scoring system, 42 professional artists from 18 countries and regions — including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, the Netherlands, France, China, Spain, Poland, Finland, Italy, Japan, Czech Republic, Ireland, Portugal, Vietnam, Ghana, Hong Kong (China), and Taiwan (China) — were honored with awards.
The jury adhered to a strict evaluation standard that placed no restrictions on nationality, residence, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. The evaluation focused solely on the overall quality of the submitted works, the artist’s résumé, and academic or professional influence within the art industry.
Additionally, the artworks were assessed in relation to the exhibition’s theme “The Lost Vision” — exploring abstract concepts such as individual emotion and poetic aesthetics, works that express philosophical depth and emotional resonance. Originality and unique artistic expression, breaking away from conventional frameworks or established aesthetic norms, were key considerations. Innovation could be reflected through material usage, structural form, and expressive techniques.
Based on these criteria, the Gallery NAT curatorial team nominated Gold, Silver, and Bronze Award candidates in each category. The academic review panel then independently scored the finalists in the Gold Award categories. Categories included: Gold Award for Painting, Gold Award for Visual or Digital Art, Gold Award for Photography, Gold Award for Mixed Media, and Gold Award for Moving Image & Interactive Art, alongside corresponding Silver and Bronze Awards. The highest average score among all categories was awarded the “Best in Exhibition.”
“The Lost Vision” – 2025 London Contemporary Art Review Exhibition was established to explore a growing sense of absence and disconnection in today’s world. As the core theme of this exhibition, The Lost Vision reminds us that the loss of vision is not just the fading of sight — it also signals a neglect of past memories and values, and a growing regret toward the future.
Through painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, and other media, the artists guide the audience into a world that is both real and imagined — revealing the cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and spiritual values we are gradually leaving behind.

ITSLIQUID Group, in collaboration with YMX Arts, is pleased to announce the open call for BODYSPACES, the first appointment of CANVAS INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2025, which will take place in London, at ELEMENTS Contemporary Art Space from September 05 to September 18, 2025.
CANVAS is an international Art Fair that will showcase collective and solo projects by leading and emerging international artists. The 2025 edition will represent a forum for the direct exchange of ideas and contacts between collectors, artists, photographers, designers and art professionals. The art fair features paintings, sculptures, photography, installations, video art and live performance.
The word “canvas” was used for the first time in Italy in the 14th century, and it has become the most common support medium for oil painting, replacing wooden panels. Over the centuries, the canvas’ meaning has changed, starting from paintings, through photographic and cinematographic film, exploring the human body, to the digital world. Canvas is the creatives’ common ground, on which they can express themselves.
BODYSPACES is about the perception of our body, the first step for the appropriation of our identity. The bodies are the spaces for human experimentation, for the achievement of humanity and its overtaking. The contemporary bodies are composed of corporal and virtual elements influenced by physical and psychical actions. The artistic work on the body’s hybridisation will create a new concept of humanity starting any kind of possible life in a contemporary multicultural society.
We invite artists to express, through their artistic research, the relationship between the body and human life, celebrating the new identities in contemporary times.

The City of Mühlhausen invites you to creatively reinterpret its historic old town through light art, projections, and videomapping — as part of the 2025 commemorative program "freiheyt 1525 – 500 Years of the Peasants’ War."
The light art event "Freiheitsleuchten" will take place during October 17–18, 2025, transforming six locations — including churches, squares, and alleys — into artistic installations. We are seeking contemporary visual works that engage with themes of freedom, resistance, social transformation, and memory.
One of the featured sites, Marienkirche, is part of a competition with a 10,000 Euro prize for the winning videomapping concept.
For all other locations, artists are invited to submit a concept along with a budget proposal.
Submission deadline: June 30, 2025
Info & application: https://www.genius-loci-weimar.org/en/freiheitsleuchten.html
We encourage short film creators, motion designers, and video artists from all backgrounds and disciplines to apply.
Feel free to reach out with any questions —
We’re looking forward to seeing all your creative concepts! |

Marcone Moreira (1982, Pio XII, MA) presents Vertebral, an installation with approximately 600 aluminum propellers from a vessel acquired from an Amazonian artisanal foundry, which preserves traditional techniques.
The installation is part of the No Deck project, in which artists are invited to create site-specific works for the institution's external area. Arranged over 20 meters, the propellers with six distinct sizes mimic the movement of a snake and evoke aquatic flows and displacements.
Over 20 years, Moreira has researched nautical materials, incorporating wood and metals, in addition to exploring naval carpentry and founding. His work reflects an interest in the industrial transformations of matter, linked to his proximity to the Carajás Mine, located in the southwest of the state of Pará.
The artist has held solo exhibitions in important institutions, including the Paço Imperial (Rio de Janeiro), the Instituto Tomie Ohtake (São Paulo), and the Palácio das Artes (Belo Horizonte). He has participated in group exhibitions such as the Bienal das Amazônias (Belém) and "VAIVÉM" at the CCBB (São Paulo, Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte). He has received awards from Funarte, Secult-PA, and Itaú Cultural, in addition to the Bolsa Pampulha. His works are part of public collections in museums such as the MAR (Museu de Arte do Rio), MAM-RJ, and museums in Belo Horizonte and Belém.
The exhibition is under the artistic direction of Claudio Cretti, conceived by the Instituto de Cultura Contemporânea (ICCo), carried out by the Ministry of Culture, through the Culture Incentive Law, and sponsored by Banco BV and BTG Pactual. |

The artist Mônica Schoenacker (1967, São Paulo, SP) explores silkscreen, combining artisanal and industrial processes, to occupy the facade of Casa de Cultura do Parque as part of the Dando Bandeira project. The latter encourages artists to create works in the form of flags, evoking their visual symbolism that represents origins, values, and history.
In Embandeirada, the pieces are printed in the workshops and with the collaboration of the Instituto Acaia team, transforming this printing technique into a space for creation and learning. The research on printing patterns is also part of the exhibition, investigating their repetitions and graphic meanings. In this way, Schoenacker works on the relationship between image, materiality, and reproduction, resignifying everyday elements.
A graduate of FAU-USP and the Royal College of Art, she is the creator of Sericleta, a mobile silkscreen unit through which she carried out actions in public spaces and at SESC. She taught serigraphy, printing, and arts at various institutions and currently works at Instituto Acaia. The exhibition at Casa de Cultura do Parque had the contributions of Gabriel Balbino, Jeane de Jesus, and Maria Vitória Ferreira Nascimento, the Institute's team, and Gênesis Tintas.
The exhibitions are under the artistic direction of Claudio Cretti, conceived by the Instituto de Cultura Contemporânea (ICCo), carried out by the Ministry of Culture, through the Culture Incentive Law, and sponsored by Banco BV and BTG Pactual. |

Founded in 1970 in Basel, Art Basel is the global leader in art fairs. With events in Basel, Hong Kong, Miami Beach, and Paris, the fair showcases coveted works by the most influential names in modern and contemporary art, as well as rising stars of the industry.
Global powerhouses like Hauser & Wirth and Gagosian frequent the fair’s many editions annually, exhibiting alongside promising smaller and mid-level galleries. While the high cost of exhibiting at Art Basel and the prospect of reaching wealthy clients means dealers typically bring high-value, blue-chip works, it’s not uncommon to find gems under $10,000.
The fair atmosphere varies between each location. The Basel edition, for example, draws seasoned collectors, curators, and academics. Its tone is more serious compared to the Miami Beach event, which attracts a range of collectors, celebrities, and art enthusiasts equally excited for the parties as they are for the art.

With the arrival of spring, the COMEL Award returns as scheduled—the international competition that promotes the use of aluminium in art. Applications for the 2025 edition are officially open.
All adult artists living and working in Europe can participate by submitting an aluminium artwork inspired by this year's theme: ‘Aluminium, the Silent Strength’.
Aluminium is a surprising material: lightweight yet strong, ductile yet tenacious. It changes shape without losing its qualities and withstands pressure and transformations while always remaining itself. It is no coincidence that aluminium is widely used in construction, transport, and everyday applications—it can transform into a thin food industry packaging while also serving as the primary material for ship and spacecraft fuselages.
Like human beings, aluminium can adapt to situations and overcome even the most difficult challenges, constantly finding new forms, structures, and balances. This edition aims to explore the resilience of this metal—as well as human resilience—in facing difficulties, tackling complex challenges, and reinventing itself each time. It is not about brute force on display but rather an underlying energy, ready to be tested without seeking attention.
Through metal, Artists are invited to convey the human ability to overcome hardships and, especially in moments of fragility, to find an inner strength that allows them to move forward. Participants will be challenged to test aluminium, exploring its ability to withstand, support, and endure over time. Applications are open until June 22.
Once the call for entries closes, critic and writer Giorgio Agnisola, alongside a jury of experts, will select 13 finalist works to be exhibited at Spazio COMEL in Latina from October 18 to November 8. At the close of the exhibition, two awards will be assigned: the 2025 COMEL Award winner, chosen by the jury, and the COMEL Audience Award winner, given to the artist whose work receives the most votes from exhibition visitors. The 2025 COMEL Award winner will receive a monetary award of €3,500 and the opportunity to expose their artworks in a solo exhibition at Spazio COMEL.
Participation is free. To apply or for more information, visit www.premiocomel.it. |

WILDNESS
Call for Exhibition │Free entry
Accepted media: Photography, Video, Digital Visual Design
Group Exhibition in Rome. December 2025
-
Men can learn to know themselves through their relationship with nature; awakening in them feelings, curiosity, fears etc., thus bringing out the most authentic side of one’s own being.
Re-discovering the connections that bring men closer to everything in nature, one perceives and elaborates an organic cohesion with the world that influences his own emotions, thoughts and visions of the world. Precisely through the visions of the natural world, the call for the exhibition "Wildness" intends to select works that can express a "romantic" approach to nature, as well as those works of the documentary, scientific -anthropological/ -botany/ -zoological kind that help us get in touch with it.

The KNOKKE ART FAIR breaks with the established tradition of an art fair on many levels. Because of the concept itself, and because of what surrounds it.
Several art galleries fill the halls of the Casino every year with remarkable, high-quality artworks. The art fair is a continuation of the fair landscape in Knokke-Heist. An annual tradition that has been established by the same organisation, in the same city, for more than 50 years.
A qualitative audience and unique selection of modern and contemporary art. An independent art fair that focuses on
qualitative modern and contemporary art. The organization offers the visitors an international view of the current art landscape, thanks to a careful selection.
The location and the period in which the fair takes place provide many success factors. A qualitative audience, a deep-rooted
interest in art and a strong holiday feeling attract many buyers. The perfect opportunity to also invite your valued customers and acquaintances in a summery relaxed atmosphere. This at a unique location that arouses a lot of interest.

Photographers retain copyright.
The 12 winners will have the opportunity to become Virtual Associates of the Gallery, with a free profile page on our website for one year (June 2025-May 2026). |

ROME INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2025 analyzes the relationship between body and space, and the hybridization between identities and cultural/physical/social/urban settings in contemporary times, through two main sections: MIXING IDENTITIES and FUTURE LANDSCAPES.
MIXING IDENTITIES analyzes the hidden parts of our identities, through an immersive experience inside the fascinating universe of the complex labyrinths of our consciousness. The human body is a changing system that connects us with other bodies and spaces to perceive the surrounding reality; a strong communication system with its own language and infinite ways of expression.
FUTURE LANDSCAPES are abstract, infinite and conceptual, associated with a sense of freedom and infinite extension. Primarily experienced with the mind, spaces redefine their limits and borders, transforming surfaces in an open flow of pure ideas. This section focuses on the concept of the borders and the structures between body, mind and soul, the human identity and the city, the space and the ground. |

October 9 to 13, 2025
There are dozens of art events in London at any given time, but autumn is dominated by Frieze. The Regent’s Park comes alive every October as the grounds for Frieze and its sister fair, Frieze Masters, both unmissable events on the cultural calendar.
Last year’s edition of Frieze, which focuses only on contemporary art and living artists, featured 160 galleries from over 40 countries. Frieze Masters, on the other hand, featured 130 galleries presenting work made before the year 2000. Bridging both events is Frieze Sculpture, a curated public display of artworks set in the English Gardens—perfect for a dose of art and culture while enjoying the outdoors. |

September 5 to 7, 2025
It’s been over 30 years since The Armory Show launched in New York, and its light hasn’t dimmed since. A fixture in the itinerary of jet-setting collectors, this event at the Javits Center brings first-rate international contemporary and modern art galleries to the Big Apple.
The fair is incredibly influential, so much so that this week in September is colloquially called “Armory Week”, which kicks off the autumn art season globally. Even if you don’t venture into the halls, Armory Off-site brings large-scale, interactive art pieces around New York City so you can experience inspiring works first-hand. |

ABOUT THE CALL
Unframed is a cross-disciplinary exhibition project that intertwines contemporary art with augmented reality (AR). Set across five European countries—Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Italy, and Romania—and potentially reaching farther, the project challenges conventional modes of interaction between audiences and societal processes, using AR to transform static artworks into dynamic portals of dialogue and discovery.
At its core, Unframed invites emerging artists to interpret topics like climate action, digital rights, food security, deforestation, coastal vegetation, queer culture, and others that are covered by European politics. These interpretations take the form of ten unique exisitng artworks (we are not commissioning you to make new work), that will be displayed through AR, enabling audiences to interact with the works using their smartphones or tablets. This immersive experience is designed to make policy tangible, offering new ways for viewers—especially younger generations—to engage with ongoing societal processes.
The addition of a physical installation that will support the digital experience–Reality Array modules–aims to improve the project’s accessibility and further our environmental efforts. This modular exhibition system, made from recycled plastic, replaces single-use AR markers with adaptable, transportable structures. This approach opens the exhibition to diverse spatial configurations, ranging from gallery settings to public spaces. Reality Array is inspired by modules designed by Luca Bilbo Rasmussen and Selma Lindhardt Blomberg for the Juxtapose Art Fair.
PARTNERS
De Structura, BASIS, Club Silencio, TIcAS, Subtopia, Artlink
Supported by the European Cultural Foundation and co-funded by the European Union.
PRACTICALITIES
Applicants: European artists 21 to 40 years of age may choose up to three topics from the 15 provided and submit relevant artworks.
If you are a visual or performance artist in the mentioned age group with work addressing any of the topics listed below, this call is for you. We think Europe is full of engaging diverse perspectives, and we invite all artists, who see themselves as in some way European—no matter their race, gender, religion, origin, language, cultural background—to join in. Honestly, this call is for everyone, who works with any of the topics below.
Themes: Each topic is derived from European Parliament legislative documents from the last three terms (2014–2024).
De Structura highlighted 15 European Parliament documents addressing a wide range of issues—15 topics for you to explore. We believe these questions often serve as a starting point for artists who aim to spark dialogue, discussion, or exploration through their work.
Mediums: Accepted formats include 2D artworks (e.g., high-quality images of paintings, short series of paintings or drawings), 3D works (e.g., sculptures, installations), other forms of digital artworks, and video documentation for performance art.
Locations: The exhibition will be displayed in at least five locations across Estonia, Italy, Sweden, and Finland between March and November 2025.
Fee: Each selected artist will receive a one-time fee of €200. There is no application fee. In short, we try to give and not take.
Q&A: A live Q&A session will be held on Instagram in January, with the exact date announced on De Structura’s social media channels.
Timeline: The open call runs from December 27 to February 1, with feedback provided to applicants in March. |

MASP — Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateubriand presents, from June 30th to September 3rd, the exhibition Comodato MASP Landmann — cerâmicas e metais pré-colombianos [Long-term loan MASP Landmann — Pre-Columbian ceramics and metals], held on the 2nd basement floor of the museum. Curated by Marcia Arcuri, MASP adjunct curator of pre-Columbian art, with support of Leandro Muniz, MASP assistant curator, the show gathers 721 pre-Columbian artifacts produced by indigenous people from America between the 2nd century b.c. and the 16th century, and it is accompanied by the launching of a catalogue with three unpublished essays in Portuguese. The show is supported by JP Morgan.
This is the second show dedicated to the long-term loan of the Pre-Columbian art collection of Edith and Oscar Landmann, lent in 2016 for 10 years to the museum. The first presented a series of fabric and was exhibited in 2019, a year dedicated to the history of women, feminist history. In the years before, 2017 and 2018, two seminars were held on the theme. Now, the public finally has access to the objects from the long-term loan, attributed to 35 archeological cultures from America. Items from Chavín, Paracas, Nasca, Moche, Huari, Lambayeque, Chimú, Chancay, Inca, Calima, Tolima, Zenú and Muísca cultures, as well as the Marajoara culture, from the Brazilian Amazon, are present in this show and constitute an extensive historic and scientific legacy built by the populations that lived where today we find Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Mexico, Brazil and the Caribbean countries.
The show gathers artifacts that reflect plural ideas, gestures, techniques and material practices especially in ceramics and metal, but also in wood, stone and bones, objects that also have feathers, fibers and pigments made from minerals or plants. “The history of the indigenous populations of America is distant from most Brazilians, being practically absent from the bibliographic references and textbooks produced in the country. On the other hand, there is a dissemination of archeological and ethnographic knowledge on the Indigenous America through museums and other art institutions. This is the background that presents the second show of the long-term loan MASP Landmann”, states the adjunct curator, Marcia Arcuri.
To identify the origin of the objects in the collection, the researchers’ methodologies can detect similarities in the style of different artifacts, and from that, compare and analyze them in a set of cultural elements. Based on information on the items found in archeological backgrounds, the styles can be associated to certain distribution areas and time periods. However, the spatial and chronological boundaries of the so-called archeological cultures are not always clear and, each time, new field researches and excavations lead to a review of the previous comprehension.
“Reevaluation of the archeological data interpretation will always happen, given that there is still a lot to be explored in field researches”, explains Arcuri. And she continues: “The nature of archeological science requires an extensive investment (of personal, financial and technological resources), an ongoing dialogue with the reexamination of theoretical paradigms of knowledge productions and, above all, the social commitment to the contemporary indigenous population”.
“We understand that some common segments that underlie the historical aspects of each item’s production can be understood as structuring elements of the native American social cosmogony. When we assume the potential of the archeological collections to the scientific investigation, we value the collectors view that kept an attentive eye to the world of the selected objects, an important element in the Landmann collection”, concludes the adjunct curator.
Long-term loan MASP Landmann — Pre-Columbian ceramics and metals is part of MASP’s 2023 program dedicated to Indigenous Histories. This year the agenda includes shows by Carmézia Emiliano, MAHKU, Paul Gauguin, Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe, Melissa Cody, and also the collective exhibit Indigenous Histories.
CATALOGUE
In order to expand the knowledge on cultural and scientific heritage of the native American people, a catalogue, available in Portuguese, was developed to the show and gathers three essays, in addition to images of the archeological pre-Columbian artworks. The book is organized by Marcia Arcuri, with the assistance of Leandro Muniz, and includes introductions by Adriano Pedrosa and Julio Landmann, essays by George Lau, Marcia Arcuri, Marcos Martinón-Torres and María Alicia Uribe Villegas. With the design signed by Edilaine Cunha, the publication has 408 pages and over 800 images, including maps and a presumed chronology. One of the highlights in the publication is the emphasis on the social cosmogony of the native American.
Only a few art collections in the world gather such a meaningful ensemble, capable of revealing the ethnic and cultural diversity of the ancient past of the American continent. The items are attributed to 35 distinct “archeological cultures”, a definition of a set of artifacts that have common vision, technology and style and that make it possible to speculate cultural and temporal boundaries, as well as processes of interaction and trade between different pre-Columbian populations.
ABOUT LONG-TERM LOAN MASP LANDMANN
Since 2016, the Long-term loan MASP Landmann is in place, establishing a lending contract with The Edith and Oscar Landmann Collection – acknowledged as one of the most important archives of pre-Columbian art in Latin America and as one of the few exhibited in Brazilian museums. Throughout over 50 years, Oscar and Edith Landmann gathered 906 pieces of pre-Columbian artworks, including fabrics, ceramics and metals. There are works produced by different people, most of them in South America, between 1200 b.C and the 16th century — over 2500 years. |
