Szabo says, “Several years ago, while sorting through my parents belongings before putting their home on the market, I read a line in a novel that really hit home.

The character, who was dealing with similar issues and emotions as I, declared “the last thing your parents teach you is how to die.”

As I watch my elderly parents decline, with increasingly fragile health, and diminishing cognitive
abilities, I am overwhelmed with emotion, and a touch of fear. Certainly, these emotions spring from the inevitable loss of my parents, but more striking is the sudden realization of what lies ahead for me and my husband as we age, with no children to supervise us through this transition.

This call for art, “Confronting Mortality” seeks work that looks at lives lived, the end, and the aftermath, in fresh new conceptual ways. Thinking about death is more than just funeral planning and and casket selection. Show me how you celebrate life, cherish memories, and how we hold on to our family history through your original photographs.”

20% of artist fees go to charity. 10% to the curator’s charity and 10% to the first place winner’s charity.

First Place winner receives Q & A with curator. Curator reviews first place winner. One or more past curators may contribute reviews as well. 10% of artist fees goes to the first place winner’s charity. The first place image is on our splash page for a month.
