The Gallery on the Green presents the Members’ Themed Exhibit:”Winter Blues” with 2 solo shows from February 8th through March 10th. Gallery hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The gallery is located near the intersection of Dowd Avenue and Route 44 at 5 Canton Green Road. There will be an opening reception with free refreshments on Saturday, February 9th from 6 – 9 pm.

For “Winter Blues”, the members imaginatively interpret the season and the color in sculpture, prints, drawings, paintings and photographs that they have creasted for this special exhibition. This exhibit is on the handicapped accessible gallery main floor.

The upstairs galleries feature solo shows by Stephanie Rogers and David Owen. Roger’s paintings in, “Scenes to Soothe the Soul,” are peaceful ‘soft scapes’ that gently invite you to pause and relax for a moment to reflect and refresh. Her warm, yet vibrant colors blend and contrast to offer a mellow escape from the daily grind. She also captures New England and other scenic places she has visited in landscapes and vistas that ‘take you there’. Working in oil or acrylic, she focuses on rich colors with an Impressionist style. As someone who has lived in Simsbury, Canton and now Barkhamsted, Rogers is naturally drawn to the beauty of the Farmington Valley.

In his solo photography show “Making Music” David Owen explores the inner and invisible life of bowed string instruments (violins, violas, cellos and string bass). He takes us through construction, repair and restoration of these instruments with attention to their inside where they have an inner and invisible life – the side where the music is made. He follows the instruments to rehearsal at the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. These images are of music that is made from the inside out, an idea which originated from a trip to Florence, Italy. Owen has been photographing over the years using small to large formats in film and digital medium. A five-year project in the ranching country of Nebraska resulted in the book, Like No Other Place (University of Nebraska Press, 2012).

The Canton Artists’ Guild at the Gallery on the Green, the longest continuously-running artist guild in the state with over 100 juried artisans, has 3 separate galleries and hosts 9 month-long exhibitions each year.
