The artistic visions of ceramic forms in nature will be represented in “Or, in Other Words” at the Gallery/Shop at Wesleyan Potters from Wednesday August 28 through Sunday September 29, 2019, with the Opening Reception on Saturday, September 7 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Ceramic artists Lynne Scullion of Middletown, CT, and Kathryn (Kat) Mayfield from Meriden, CT. both work with forms in nature, thinking about them in similar ways while expressing them differently.

Lynne says of her inspirations, “Microphotographs of sea creatures, old drawings of flora and fauna, flowers in my garden all compel me to abstract their forms in my work.” Her designs are influenced by the natural world, with a debt to photographs by Karl Blossfeldt. “He loved the curve of an unfurling fern, or the texture of a seed pod, just as I do.” Lynne says her work is “definitely not conventionally beautiful but is interesting.” She describes her work as “sculptural, with a nod to the functional.”

Kathryn (Kat) makes primarily functional items and says, “I typically make items that I hope will be used in the owner’s everyday life. I want people to touch my pottery, drink coffee from my mugs, serve salad from my bowls, . . .” Similarly to Lynne, Kat is inspired by natural colors, patterns, and forms, “. . . the tracery of frost on a window, the lace of a dragonfly wing, the shapes of leaves, shells, flowers, crystals.”

Gallery/ Shop hours are: Monday and Tuesday by appointment, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 860-347-5925 or visit the website at www.wesleyanpotters.com, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
