Jon Ching’s work has been driven by a sense of responsibility and reverence for the natural world. He has raised awareness through his paintings by showing us the amazing depth and beauty in nature that is irreplaceable and worth protecting. Painting has also served as a medium for commentary on social or cultural issues within the human world. In both, the artist has practiced a form of quiet advocacy, using the beauty in nature to awaken the best in us.
Path of Least Resistance, is a reflection of the artist’s inner world and personal life. At a moment when the demands of every day have become increasingly consuming, Ching has found himself distilling larger ideas into simpler and purer form, allowing the work to emerge from more personal experiences, emotions, and small moments that define his present state of mind.
2026 has been a tough year for many, filled with challenges and changes. The capacity to feel too deeply about the larger world has, at times, needed to take a back seat to day-to-day responsibilities and problem solving. For Ching, this exhibition reflects more internally on what it means to be the parent of a young child, a working artist, and as a partner making sacrifices to sustain a time-intensive career amidst the mounting demands of life. In this moment, the artist had turned inward, finding meaning in the things closest to him.
“I allowed pieces in this exhibition to form if they needed to, and to process feeling and life’s moments as they came, through the work. There were pieces that I had conceived of and sketched that became something entirely new as I worked on them for this show. There were pieces that I worked on and tried to force to be one thing, only for them to define themselves as another. And there were pieces that seemed to float down from the muses and land neatly at the end of my brush. Looking back, it felt like a long exercise of trusting my intuition, and the process.” – Jon Ching
Throughout the exhibition, familiar symbols take on more personal and immediate significance as reflections of nature’s eternal adaptation to change. Rocks, strong and enduring, become symbols of protection, stability and the hard work required to sustain a complex life. Water, both a force of opposition and support, serves as wisdom to find ways around obstacles to get past them, following the path of least resistance when needed. Fire continues to represent inner strength, determination, and drive, an essential element that enables us to continue, and to persevere. Despite it all, the artist still believes that every living organism is invisibly linked, and that the enigmatic wonder of nature exists in the most significant and miniscule of details.
By allowing himself to relinquish control and follow his intuition, Jon Ching has discovered a different kind of strength to meet the times. The exhibition reminds us that there is meaning in small moments, resilience in finding joy even when circumstances feel overwhelming, and that, for now, for him, the path of least resistance is not about turning away from the larger world, but finding a way to live within it.

Jon is a self-trained artist originally from Kaneohe, Hawaii and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Steeped in the natural beauty of O’ahu, Hawai’i, his island upbringing instilled in him indigenous lessons of appreciation and respect for nature, forming the foundation of his fascination with the natural and wild world, which deeply influences and drives his work.
