In the years during and immediately after World War II, Bay Area artists were seeking a new visual vocabulary. Figurative work became more expressionistic and more likely to incorporate aspects of abstraction. Already familiar with European abstraction, they were seeking a more nativist form of expression. By the late 40’s, most turned to non-objective abstraction. The locus of this movement was the California School of Fine Arts (later to become the San Francisco Art Institute.) This show features a few of those artists as they pushed the boundaries of representational art in new directions. Works by Walter Kuhlman, Robert McChesney, and Hassel Smith are included, as well as Ed Corbett, Robert Howard and Lundy Siegriest.

We are also showing a selection of new inventory, both contemporary and vintage. Artists include Ben Aronson, Catherine Daley, Elaine de Kooning, Iva Hladis, Andreas Nottebohm, Michael Ramos, Melvin Schuler, Louis Siegriest and Pat Steir.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 5th from 3-7pm. The exhibition will run August 3rd – September 30th, 2023.
