Front Street’s Third Annual Juried Group Show: Reflection.

Reflection is an essential process of light and surfaces. It is also the process of self-recognition. Narcissus, the first narcissist, looked into a pool and fell in love with his own image, which he took to be another. We still have pools, and we also have mirrors and phones and various new pools of light to stare into, and we’re not necessarily any better at recognizing ourselves. We think that these shows are projections from out there, but it’s we who are projecting: all the terrible things we see, and also all the beauty.

Reflection is the theme of Front Street Gallery’s third annual juried group show, opening in Patterson, NY, Sunday, October 19, from 10am-2pm, with food served next door at the Front Street Cafe. The gallery is also part of the ArtEast Dutchess Open Studio Tour, some 40 artists in studios and galleries throughout Dutchess County open to the public for the weekends of Oct. 18-19 and Oct. 25-26. Like ripples in water, all technology has its own bent. Reflected images are altered by the surface, refracted and reversed, familiar and opposite at the same time. By mirror-images we know ourselves. In the world of art, we recognize and explore the medium that allows us to project ourselves onto paper or canvas or a photographic print. This is craft, the talent or experience that allows us to flow with the material, that lets our spirit be expressed in material form. Art work gives us awareness of the process, and allows us to share.

“Reflection” is a group show with a variety of interpretations of this theme, from the purely visual to the deeply psychological. Seen in one place, the works of “Reflection”–in drawing and painting, photography and sculpture–are revelations of this particularly human process.
