This spring Agora Gallery proudly presents two group shows: Lyrical Abstraction and Encounters: Nature and Culture.
Featuring eight artists, Lyrical Abstraction is a renewed inquiry into the spatial questions posed by abstraction. Clea von Döhren and Mao Lizi have an almost mystical intuition of spatial presentation. While von Döhren paints utopian landscapes that veer off into dream, Lizi highlights the spatial structure of the framed canvas, making it’s object-like solidity appear porous by way of large, gestural strokes of paint. Iftah Geva and Attila Mata are both sculptors who physically recreate the spatial dimensions normally relegated to paintings. Howard Harris and Hiroko Saigusa occupy a intermediate realm between realism and and abstraction, alluding to the principles of design while blurring any and all boundaries between decoration and illumination. Finally, Dana Ingesson and Alexandra Verbeek are painters of pure abstraction whose works in watercolors and oils, respectively, create dimensional surfaces and sudden horizons out of the flatness intrinsic to paper or canvas.
Encounters: Nature and Culture features six artists whose works highlight the underlying presence of subjectivity in all objective understanding. Elena Gastón Nicolás and MVR both take landscapes as their theme, and yet the brazen colors of the worlds they depict make their pictures hyperreal, suggesting the manner in which the mind reconstructs experience from memory. Daniel Loveridge and Ellen Cuylaerts utilize techniques specific to “photographic realism,” while making sure only to depict structures and beings that reflect back an intense quality of subjectivity. Finally, Franck Sastre and Zie Otto, in their respective media, portray a lyrical awareness: Sastre, in mixed-media works that appear both realistic and dreamlike, and Otto in photographs in that seem to capture the reflexivity of self-awareness within the frame of a portrait, foregrounding the indefinite limit where selfhood ends and the world begins.
