The Walter Wickiser Gallery is proud to present the latest solo exhibition of paintings by Lauren Worth, entitled “Tree Spirits,” from April 28th to May 22nd, 2018. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 3rd, 6pm – 8pm.
In Worth’s paintings, she strives to reconnect herself and others through playful reverence of the outdoor world. She is not looking for nature’s perfections but rather the aberrations and strangeness that can be so delightful and surprising to discover if we only take the time. Worth believes that it is in the careful study of those imperfections-the asymmetry of shape, the roughness of texture, the decay and impermanence of lifeforms – that we can truly understand and appreciate the imperfections in ourselves.
Worth’s current body of work is like deviating from a familiar forest path and discovering a strange garden. Each piece skirts the border between the real and the imagined like a memory of our childhood when exploring the natural world was our favorite pastime. She creates her work through a blending of paint and found imagery bearing witness to nature in all its wonder and fragility. Worth intends for her work to remind us of the garden we loved but lost over time.
Worth’s earned her MA in Liberal Studies from UNC – Greensboro, and was a professional graphic designer in her earlier career years. From 1989 – 1999, she worked as a painter of faux nishes and trompe l’oeil for the Wind Rose, an importer of antiques and accessories selling to an international clientele with showrooms in Greensboro and High Point, NC. Worth also has served on the boards of Greenhill Center for NC Art, Chair of the Weatherspoon Art Museum Foundation board, and Chair/ Co-Founder of the Public Art Endowment in Greensboro, NC.
Worth’s paintings are in corporate and private business collections in Guilford County, NC, including the Cone Health Cancer Center, Greensboro Country Club, and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. Private collections include Greensboro, Charlotte, Atlanta, Linville, Raleigh, Morehead City, Figure 8 Island (North Carolina) and New York City, Portland, OR, Watch Hill, RI, Chicago, IL, Pasadena, CA., and Beverly Hills, CA.
An opening reception for “Tree Spirits” will be held on Thursday, May 3rd, from 6 – 8 pm. For further information, please contact the gallery at (212) 941-1817, Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
