The Walter Wickiser Gallery is proud to present its rst solo exhibition of paintings by Karen Green Recor entitled “Kinda Blue” from April 28th to May 22nd, 2018. The opening reception will be held Thursday, May 3rd, 6pm – 8pm.
Recor has been traveling around to American Indian sites in the U.S., to the Mayan ruins in Peru, and many ancient sites in Europe and Southeast Asia. She is seduced by the primitive texture, color and forms of earlier and contemporary civilizations. These travels by Recor have been an impetus for further discovery of contemporary art making techniques and textures that were absorbed into the artist’s psyche and art work. These paintings are created by layering the use of color, light, calligraphic lines, varied textures and tactile mixed media.
The form and composition of the paintings contribute to the exciting process found through the simpli cation using only the formal elements in an artwork rather the replicating which exists in nature. Accidents versus planned mark making and their seeming dissonance contribute to the elements of visual excitement in these paintings. Recor believes that this is the point in a painting where it transcends the natural world and instead brings one into a sensual internal world. Color transformation continues to enhance depth and emotion as each painting nds an evocative voice that may lead the viewer on their own personal seductive journey.
Recor earned her B. S. from Russell Sage College (Troy, N.Y.), her M.S. in art education from Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Ct.), her C.A.S. degree from Wesleyan University (Middletown, Ct.), and her M.F.A. from Hartford Art School, University of Hartford (Hartford, Ct.). Since 1984 Recor has had both group and solo exhibitions in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Europe. Recor’s paintings are also collected and commissioned by corporations as well as represented in private collections.
