“Like a reclusive rock star, Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with the Pearl Earring rarely goes on tour – and when she does she’s met by a stampede of fanatical fans.” Stefanie Cohen of The Wall Street Journal.

The High Museum of Art in Atlanta will be the second museum in America to present “Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis.” The show will include works by Rembrandt and Frans Halsis on loan from the Royal Picture Gallery, Mauritshuis in The Hague. Due to a two year building renovation, the gallery has agreed to release its very rare, prestigious collection of Dutch paintings for the first time in over thirty years.

Dutch Golden Age painting followed its European counter parts in subject and naturalism, such as with Caravaggio, but was the leader in creating a simplified theme of still life and landscape. Featured in this exhibition will be thirty-five paintings representing a variety of subjects and technique typical of 17th-century artists in the Dutch Period. Restored especially for the American tour will be “Vase of Flowers” painting by Rachel Ruysch, one of the few female painters of the Dutch Golden Age; as well as the celebrated popular works of Johannes Vermeer‘s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and the “The Goldfinch” by Carel Fabritius.
