Please join us for a book signing to celebrate photographer Marisa Scheinfeld’s book THE BORSCHT BELT: Revisiting the Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland. This narrative and text-based photography book presents over 100 images of dozens of hotel and bungalow sites and takes the viewer deep into the heart of the lost world of the Borscht Belt. The dramatic and rich color photographs of the ruins of what were once vibrant hubs of human activity evoke curious emotions and feelings, both light and dark.
THE BORSCHT BELT features essays by Stefan Kanfer and Jenna Weissman Joselit. Joselit, Professor of Judaic Studies & Professor of History at The George Washington University, is a historian of daily life, especially that of America’s Jews. She is the author of The Wonders of America: Revisiting Jewish Culture 1880 – 1950 and A Perfect Fit: Clothes, Character, and the Promise of America. Stefan Kanfer is a former writer and editor of Time, a contributing editor to City Journal, and an authority on a wide range of political, cultural and social topics. He is the author of more than a dozen books, among them Stardust Lost: The Triumph, Tragedy, and Mishugas of the Yiddish Theater in America and A Summer World: The Attempt to Build a Jewish Eden in the Catskills, from the Days of the Ghetto to the Rise and Decline of the Borscht Belt.
Limited edition photographs from Scheinfeld’s book will be available through the gallery.
The gallery is pleased to host a matzo tasting during the event with Kevin Rodriguez, co-founder and owner of The Matzo Project. Kevin will be tasting an assortment of flavors from his renowned line of artisanal matzo.
