“Summer of Love” Bay Area Juried Exhibition – at Arc Gallery

DESCRIPTION: The year 2017 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love in San Francisco. The Summer of Love refers to the summer of 1967, when as many as 100,000 young people converged on Haight-Ashbury, making San Francisco the epicenter of the hippie revolution and a melting pot of music, psychedelic drugs, sexual freedom, creative expression, and politics.
Arc Gallery announces “Summer of Love,” a Bay Area call for art. This exhibition pays tribute to the 1967 Summer of Love and celebrates it’s 50th anniversary. Bay Area artists are invited to submit works that celebrate or reimagine the brief period in 1967 that was the Summer of Love. Artists may explore these themes: Peace, Love, Freedom; social movements that arose out of the Summer of Love such as Anti-war, Environmental, Free Speech, Black Power, Women’s Movement, Gay Rights, Sexual Revolution, Farm Workers, Student Movement, etc; anti-establishment attitudes; hippies and flower children; psychedelia; 1967 bands and music; pop art & op art; fiber art incorporating tie-dye, macramé, embroidery or beading; poster art; and artwork utilizing fonts popular in that era. Help us recreate and celebrate the amazing revolution that started in the Haight-Ashbury and changed the world forever.
ELIGIBILITY: Only artists residing in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. The Bay Area includes the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, and Stanislaus.

JURORS: Arc Partners – Matthew Frederick, Priscilla Otani, Stephen C. Wagner, and Mike Yochum
JUROR’S AWARD: A Juror’s Award ribbon, certificate and $250 will be presented to each of the three works that express the most imaginative interpretation of the theme.

GALLERY & ON-LINE GALLERY: There are two opportunities to get into this show. The juror will select works that will be exhibited in the Arc Gallery at 1246 Folsom Street and works that will be included only on the Arc On-line Gallery.
