Hinovations Art Gallery is accepting proposals for a thematic, group art exhibition entitled, “Day of the Dead”. Artists should submit work to be featured during the month of November 2014 from Friday, October 31 thru Friday, November 28, 2014 at Hinovations Art Gallery in McAllen, Texas. Due date is Saturday, October 25, by 5pm or earlier. Exhibit Reception, Scheduled for November 7th from 6 to 9pm. (Possible Soft Opening, Sunday, November 2, times to be determined).

Day of the Dead. Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1 and November 2, in connection with All Souls’ Day. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. José Guadalupe Posada created a famous print of a figure he called La Calavera Catrina (“The Elegant Skull”) as a parody of a Mexican upper-class female. Posada’s striking image of a costumed female with a skeleton face has become associated with the Day of the Dead, and Catrina figures often are a prominent part of modern Day of the Dead observances. In an effort to continue with the tradition of Calaveras, Hinovations Art Gallery is organizing the FIRST ANNUAL Day of the Dead Art Exhibit. Artists are invited to submit artwork related to Dia de los Muertos and the personal meaning the tradition relates.
