Sunghee Park

Presented by

Sunghee Park The last number of years, I have become fascinated by the transformation of tree trunks, branches and flora in different seasons. These two series of works are renderings of raspberry bushes in the winter and pear trees bearing fruit in the fall. For the Raspberry lithographs, I investigated how the lines, shapes and textures created by Raspberry branches generate positive and negative space against the landscape of snow. I looked at how snow creates a blank canvas enabling a strong graphical element, which re-defines objects as well as the space that exists around it. These images reflect the way that orderly or chaotic patterns can stand out or outline a frame, based on the relationship between the plants and the snow. On the other hand, the pear tree images are close-ups of tree branches and their fruits. The branches create small windows where birds can fly in and stir the air. I created the images in these series by layering multiple sheets of thin, translucent oriental papers, each containing a distinct image of nature. I transferred the images from photographs, then drew and manipulated the images by hand on a lithography plate before printing multiple images. This process is repeated for each unique image. After creating a series of prints, using the chine-college technique I layered two to four sheets of thin papers, each with a different, related image from corresponding compositions. In the process of layering single images to create the final composition, elements of nature are uniquely concealed and revealed by the slight opacity and texture of the paper and the intensity of the inks.
