Garrison Art Center will launch its 50th anniversary with an exciting exhibition in The Riverside Galleries: Ivan Chermayeff 50 Collages. Although Ivan Chermayeff may be best known throughout the world for his iconographic designs, his equally brilliant talent as a fine artist will be the focus of our first 50th anniversary celebration. An exhibition of 50 small collages by Ivan will open in The Riverside Galleries on Saturday, January 11, 2014, with a reception from 6 to 8 PM that evening to meet this talented and charming artist and to join us in a toast to our 50 years of making art. Ivan Chermayeff has created hundreds of designs, many of which have become international icons, such as The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art in LA, The Smithsonian, PBS, National Geographic, Chase Bank, PamAm Airlines, Mobil, the NBC Peacock and hundreds more. Chermayeff, a student of Harvard and Yale, is a man of multiple talents and inclinations. Design, architecture, illustration and fine art are all vital areas of his professional life. His art work has been exhibited throughout the world, and in galleries including The Corcoran Museum of Art, Washington, D.C., The Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA, Jacksonville Art Museum, Jacksonville, FL, Visual Arts Museum at the School of Visual Arts, New York, and many more. A past president of the AIGA and elected to the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, he also served for two decades as a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition in The Riverside Galleries at Garrison Art Center will feature 50 collages Ivan created to help celebrate this significant milestone in the history of the Art Center. In each of these small pieces, it is apparent that cast-off items have taken on a new and larger existence. Under the studied eye and hand of the artist, these no-longer-valued bits of life have clearly moved up the visual food chain. The perfect juxtaposition of shape, color and texture create a dynamic composition that, with just the right touch of wit, combine to create a small package that packs a giant wallop. As many of you know, Ivan designed our logo a few years ago, and we are exceedingly proud to say he has designed our vibrant 50th poster. It is the perfect 2014 nod to an organization born in 1964! Please join us to launch our 50th anniversary year with this fabulous exhibition from Ivan. It will run through February 9, 2014. The Riverside Galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm.
