The Downtown Art Center (DAC) Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of mixed media sculptures and wall works by Los Angeles-based artist Ty Pownall.
For his third solo exhibition at the DAC, Pownall introduces a body of work created largely through opposing modes of production influenced by the geography of Los Angeles, and the junction between the city and the expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
In these works, Pownall explores chaos and control through highly organized processes, which result in rectilinear and geometric abstractions, thereafter surrendering to the nature of the materiality. Through the juxtaposition of hyper-organization and spontaneity, Pownall’s works reflect our constant grappling with the natural world. These sculptures function as studies of the ways in which mankind yields, attempts to control, and submits to the urban and natural landscape. Pownall’s neighborhood of Venice, California, has played a particularly significant role in providing him with a muse, a point where the solid earth meets the fluid and the unknown.
Ty Pownall received his MFA from Claremont Graduate University. He is a Professor of Fine Art Sculpture at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. His work has been exhibited at Overtones Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), Alphonse Berber Projects (San Francisco, CA), and the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art (Malibu, CA). This is his third solo exhibition at the Downtown Art Center Gallery.
Ty Pownall: Sculptures and Wall Works will run September 8th through October 2nd. An opening reception will be held Saturday, September 13th from 7-9PM. A preview reception will be held Thursday, September 11th from 6-9PM, in conjunction with the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk.
