PHOTOcentric 2023 | Hiding in Plain Sight
Exhibition Dates: December 9, 2023 – January 7, 2024
Opening Reception: Saturday, December 9, 2023, 5 – 7 pm
November 16, 2023, Garrison, NY – Garrison Art Center (GAC) is pleased to announce

PHOTOcentric 2023, a Juried Exhibition of photos in Garrison Art Center’s Gillette Gallery from December 9, 2023 – January 7, 2024, with an opening reception on Saturday, December 9, from 5 – 7 pm.

PHOTOcentric 2023 is a biennial, Juried Exhibition featuring photos submitted by the public focusing on this year’s theme, Hiding In Plain Sight. We expect photography to preserve what we see in the world, yet so often, it shows us what is rarely seen or invisible. Photographers were invited to consider how their medium captures what is hiding in plain sight. This might include subjects as wide-ranging as social bonds, experiences behind closed doors, natural
phenomena, or structural inequity. Hiding In Plain Sight asks what are the stakes of making the invisible visible through photography.
First place awards will be granted across three distinct categories: Formation & Becoming, Disintegration & Dissolving, and Survival & Remembering. There will also be one, Grand Prize winner. All winners will be announced at the opening reception on Saturday, December 9, 5 – 7 pm. This year’s juror, Jessica Brier (she/her) is a curator and historian of art and design with a focus on the intermediality of photography, print, graphics, and architecture. She currently serves as Curator of Photography at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College.

Jessica has previously held positions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Headlands Center for the Arts, and Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. She holds a Ph.D. in art history and a Visual Studies Graduate Certificate from the University of Southern
California, an MA in curatorial practice from the California College of the Arts, and a BA from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

PHOTOcentric 2023 will be on view in the Gillette Gallery, concurrent with Beauty, Marks, and Blemishes, an exhibition of works on paper by Sky Pape in the Balter Gallery. The Galleries at
Garrison Art Center are open Tuesday – Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm.
