Founded In 1983, Gallery Route One was established by twenty-five regional artists who consolidated their diverse artmaking talents into an enduring collaborative organization which has long offered a variety of innovative programs and shows, including each year’s Juried Exhibition.
Gallery Route One is pleased to present “Crossing the Divide,” the gallery’s 2021 Annual Juried Exhibition. Representing the work of fifty-two local and regional artists, the exhibit will feature a captivating collection of work in a variety of media including painting, photography, printmaking, mixed media, textiles and sculpture. Through a myriad of different images and forms, this year’s Juried Exhibition focuses on the transformative processes made manifest by the act of making art during our unprecedented times.
The many social, political, racial and environmental issues which have characterized the 2020 COVID era have run parallel to larger cultural shifts introduced by isolation and the deepening of political dichotomies. Calling upon the need to negotiate adversity and to ultimately discover renewal through healing, the artists of “Crossing the Divide” interpret not only the disparities and divisions of 2020, but also the means by which transformations might occur as new ideas and new realities are born through the creative process.
Does art tie human experience together in a kind of collective sensibility? T.S. Eliot suggested that the “objective correlative” of culture is all around us as sensory experience which is expressed as a larger theme, one that is encompassed by collectively held emotions. Will the work in the exhibit embody resonantly shared cultural landscapes from the current times, or will it prompt new sensations that are sparked by the nuances that visually stem from our own experience as we cross the divide into a new era?
