Carlos Cruz-Diez
Chromatic Transfiguration
May 28 – July 2, 2015
Opening Reception: Thursday May 28, 6-8pm

It is with great pride that Maxwell Davidson Gallery presents Chromatic Transfiguration, a new solo exhibition by Carlos Cruz-Diez. With new work by the artist, this exhibition will include examples of virtually all of the Cruz-Diez’s color and movement investigations, as well as present historical documentation of his oeuvre and theory. This is the second show for Cruz-Diez at Maxwell Davidson Gallery, and the first in the gallery’s new Chelsea location. As such, the artist has created a site-specific work – a 30-foot “ephemeral” Chromatic Induction which will span the length of the gallery skylight.

Cruz-Diez’s work is simultaneously static and mobile, temporal and spatial. It asks the viewer to engage with the work, moving in relation to the art, joining the artist’s experimentation with the input of color and light on the eye and brain.

For over 50 years, Carlos Cruz-Diez has been one of the foremost color theorists, and kinetic and Optic artists in the world. Carlos Cruz-Diez was born in Venezuela, but has lived and worked in Paris since 1960. Among many other awards and honors that he has received, Cruz-Diez is the recipient of the Turner Medal and The Americas Society’s Golden Medal, two honorary Doctorates, and is an Officer of the Order National de la Légion d’Honneur. His work is in private and public collections around the world including MoMA, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, and Musée d’Art Moderne.
