Jun. 3, 2019 - Sep. 9, 2018
Ancestral Modern: Australian Aboriginal Art from the Kaplan & Levi Collection showcases current painting and sculpture by Australian Aboriginal artists. The exhibition focuses on the 1970’s revival within the ancient traditions of indigenous Australian art.
Aboriginal people increased awareness within the art world by the late 1960s, following decades of grassroots activism. Since then, many artists have translated their work medium of traditional forms, such as rock and body painting, to easily shared media with viewers around the world. Their sculptures, large, colorful canvases, and patterned designs represent symbols that communicate beliefs and histories, laws and rituals with connection to the land.
