WEST RUTLAND, VT- The Carving Studio & Sculpture Center is pleased to announce that SculptFest (not held in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions) will return to the CSSC this September 11-October 24. Guest curator Steve Shaheen has chosen the theme of artifact for the annual site-specific installation/ performance event and artists are invited to submit proposals.

ar·ti·fact /ˈärdəfakt/ 1. an object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest.
From Latin arte ‘by or using art’ + factum ‘something made’ (neuter past participle of facere ‘make’).

The year is 3021. Humans are still around, but civilizations have risen and fallen, languages have morphed beyond recognition, and with them norms and ways of thinking. If we could teleport there, it would be as disorienting as for someone transported to our time from the year 1021.

Walking through the woods of what is currently West Rutland, Vermont, a thousand years from now, a person encounters an object that was clearly fashioned by another human being. That human is you. What does it say, this artifact reaching across an almost incomprehensible gulf of time and language and culture? What would you want to telegraph about what it meant to be a human, here and now?

Artists responding to this call are encouraged to consider the art object not only as a snapshot of individual expression, or statement about a specific issue of our times, but as something rooted more broadly and essentially in the human experience. What marker will you leave for this future passerby?

Applicants are encouraged to think across and between creative disciplines and media, and to pursue metaphors connecting small-scale changes with social, historical, natural and geologic change, and of course, the CSSC and its grounds.

We invite sculptors, installation artists, sound artists, video artists, web-based artists, performance based visual artists, multimedia and other artists to submit work to this call. Please visit the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center website for more information about the history of the grounds as a former marble quarry, www.carvingstudio.org.

Applications are due Friday, July 30th, 2021, and should include:
– A one-page project description.
–  Clearly labeled drawings or equivalent representations of the proposed project.
–  Artist’s resume (no more than two pages)
–  10 images and/or videos of previous work with an emphasis on the ephemeral and site-specific.
–  An image list with material, scale, location and a brief summary of each work.
–  A brief artist statement of no more than 250 words.
–  Images must be in jpeg format, under 1MB, and clearly labeled to correspond to the image list. Videos may use website links, but please confirm that the links work.
