The Art League of Long Island invites artists from the NY tri-state area to submit entries to the upcoming juried photography competition “Pattern and Rhythm Through the Lens” showing in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery September 28 through November 2, 2014. Deadline to submit application is August 19, 2014.

The Art League asks photographers to explore the patterns and rhythms of the world around them. Rhythm is the repeated use of a shape, color, or other element or design in the images captured which help to unify the different parts into a whole. Patterns are groups of elements or motifs that repeat in a predictable manner. Elements can create rhythm and a sense of movement, which can be random or regular. One may find such elements in ocean waves, planted fields, the grain of wood, or windows of a building. Find the patterns and rhythms in the world around us, either natural or man-made. Images created via any form of photography will be accepted for consideration (i.e. shot on film, shot digitally, unaltered shots, alternative process, mixed media, digital manipulations, montages, photograms, etc.) as long as part of the image is photographically created and the photo is taken by the artist.

Juror Barbara Jaffe of Hofstra University will select the exhibitors and the award winners. Professor Jaffe is head of the photography program at Hofstra University where she has taught since 1995 after teaching experience at Sarah Lawrence, N.Y.U., Columbia University and I.C.P. She believes that it is important to know the historical as well as contemporary processes and believes in moving easily between film and digital. Her photographs are in the collections of museums and corporations around the world including the Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Philadelphia Museum, Musee de l’Elysee in Switzerland, Bibliotec Nationale in Paris, and corporations such as IBM and Polaroid.
