ONE X ONE: A Tribute to the Human Spirit, A Juried Exhibition
Athan’s European Bakery & Café
Entry Deadline: Oct. 11
MassWax is pleased to announce a call for entries for ONE X ONE: A Tribute to the Human Spirit, an exhibition celebrating the determination and endurance of the human spirit during the tragic events that surrounded the 2013 Boston Marathon.
Our venue, Athan’s European Bakery & Café, located at 1621 Beacon Street, is within the 23rd mile marker of the Boston Marathon route. Thousands of runners from around the world pass by Athan’s on their way to the finish line. Athan’s was recently featured in Boston Magazine as one of Boston’s top five coffee houses and art gallery hybrids!
Artists are encouraged to explore from the literal to conceptual interpretations of what constitutes the human spirit.
Artists are asked to submit 1’X1’ artwork panels, using encaustic as their primary medium. Individual panels chosen by the juror will be incorporated into a larger, collective installation, translating into visual language the message that it takes each and every one of us to stand strong and together when faced with adversity. Additional panels will be chosen by the juror to hang as individual pieces in the exhibition.
MassWax is the Massachusetts chapter of International Encaustic Artists (IEA), the only IEA chapter in New England, drawing members from the six New England states. The mission of MassWax is to provide a forum for artists who are interested in working with encaustic to network, exchange information, take workshops, exhibit their work and get feedback on their work from other artists in a supportive and inclusive environment.
ONE X ONE: A Tribute to the Human Spirit is open to all artists over the age of 18 working primarily with the encaustic medium. All chosen artwork must be hand- delivered to Athan’s European Bakery & Café, 1621 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA 02446. All artwork must be original and available for sale.
Two dimensional artwork which incorporates a majority of the encaustic paint medium on or within the art. Works on paper are welcome such as encaustic monotypes, encaustic monoprints, and encaustic paintings with photographic prints as long as they are adhered to a rigid, wooden panel. All panels must be 12”h x 12”w x 2”d and must be un-framed and wired for hanging (no saw tooth or other types of hangers). The sides of the panels may be finished or unfinished.
